Field Hockey Falls to VCU at Home

RICHMOND, Va. – In a defensive Atlantic 10 Conference battle, the University of Richmond Field Hockey team was able to even the score in the first quarter, but the crosstown rival VCU collected a 3-1 victory Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond, now 7-10 on the season and 2-5 in league play, will close out the regular season Sunday hosting William & Mary at noon at Crenshaw Field. Spider Hockey alumnae will be recognized at halftime.
VCU tallied the first goal of the game on a tip-in in the sixth minute of action.
Richmond answered in the ninth minute when Annie Nash scored from the top of the circle on a penalty corner play. Jess McMeeking sent a pass in to Freya MacKay for the set up for Nash's shot.
VCU broke up the tie in the 26th minute of the second quarter for the 2-1 halftime lead. Richmond took six shots with three on goal in the second quarter while holding VCU to just two shots.
Richmond goalkeeper Kristen Rake tallied three of her seven saves in the third quarter as VCU upped the offensive pressure. The Rams were able to get off five shots and earned three corners in the frame.
VCU added an insurance goal in the 54th minute, sailing a shot high past an outstretched Rake.
