Record Days by Coleman, DeGennaro Lifts Richmond Past Maine, 42-31
10/07/2023 | Football
With his six touchdown passes, Coleman tied Kyle Lauletta for most in a single game, a mark Lauletta set Sept. 16, 2017 against Howard. Coleman recorded his first career start in the contest and finished the day 25-of-36 while the offensive line kept him clean, allowing zero sacks.
The Spiders put together their highest offensive effort of the season with 487 yards including 365 passing from Coleman, while DeGennaro was responsible for career-highs in yards (113) and receptions (8) to become Richmond's first 100-yard receiver of the season. His three receiving touchdowns ties the program record for most in a game, done by five other players with the most recent coming over a decade ago on Oct. 20, 2012 when Kevin Finney caught three against James Madison.
After trailing 14-0 by the 8:55 mark of the first quarter via back-to-back trick play touchdowns by Maine (1-5, 1-3 CAA), Coleman's first touchdown pass of his career came on a 65 yard deep ball to Brooks Heagarty down the sideline to put the Spiders on the board.
Maine would kick a 23-yard field goal to extend its lead to 17-7, but the Spiders would respond to that with 21 unanswered points.
Coleman found DeGennaro for his first touchdown reception of the day on a 56-yard strike that tied a career and season long for the redshirt junior.
Coleman's next touchdown pass was a 13-yarder to redshirt freshman Quanye Veney for his first career touchdown reception, then Coleman connected with DeGennaro again on another 13-yard pass to the end zone to make it a 28-17 game.
Maine tacked on a 50-yard touchdown pass at the 5:04 mark of the second quarter to make it 28-24 and narrow the margin to the closest it would be for the rest of the game.
From there, Coleman connected with fellow true freshman Landon Ellis on an 11-yard touchdown pass, the first of Ellis' career, as the Spiders would carry a 35-24 advantage into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Coleman found DeGennaro on a two-yard touchdown pass for the pair's final scoring collaboration of the night midway through the third.
Maine added its last touchdown at the 4:37 mark of the fourth, but it wouldn't be enough as Richmond moved to 3-3 and 2-1 in CAA play with the win.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Spiders came up with a pair of interceptions thanks to D'Angelo Stocker and Bryson Parker who each recorded their second of the season. Donovan Hoilette added two sacks for a loss of 23 yards and Aaron Banks led the Spiders with 10 tackles. As a team, the Spiders came up with 10 tackles for loss for 44 yards including two each from Stocker, Hoilette and Mikey Jarmolowich.
Richmond looks to bring the momentum into next week when it travels to Rhode Island on Saturday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
