King Leads Spiders Past Queens
11/25/2023 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — Jordan King scored a game-high 24 points as Richmond rolled to a third straight lopsided win at the Robins Center, defeating Queens 90-61 Saturday evening.
King, who reached the 20-point mark for a third straight game and fourth time this season, was helped in the scoring column by Neal Quinn, who finished with 21 points and shot 10-13 from the field.
"Neal is such an instinctual, good passer that the thing we're telling him the most is to go attack the basket and try to score," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. "Tonight, he's had some really good games and we wanted to see if they were going to double team him and they were content to play him one-on-one. And when he has time to score in there he's really, really effective."
Quinn (12) and King (16) combined for 28 points in the first half as Richmond built a 48-26 lead at halftime.
A 10-2 spurt early in the second half increased Richmond's lead to 27, and the Spiders coasted to the 29-point victory from there, reaching the 90-point mark for a third straight home game in the process. It's just the second time UR has scored at least 90 points in three straight games at the Robins Center and first since its first three home games of the 2019-20 season.
King is now averaging 20.3 points per game this year, the most by a Spider through the first six games of a season since Terry Allen in 2015-16 (22.2).
"Jordan is a dynamic scorer, a guy who can score in bunches, score in different ways. He's on the attack. He's aggressive," said Mooney. "And that really helps everybody, not just from the points he puts up on the board. It helps everybody feel that much more confident as the game continues on. That mindset that he has and his aggressiveness have really helped us."
Richmond held Queens to just 32 percent shooting from the field and collected 44 rebounds, its most since Jan. 2, 2022 at Saint Louis (44). Isaiah Bigelow led UR with nine rebounds to go with 11 points.
The Spiders improved to 4-2, giving them a winning record through six games for the third time in the last five seasons. Richmond has now won six straight games vs teams currently in the Atlantic Sun Conference, a streak that dates back to the 1978-79 season.
Richmond will return to action Wednesday when the Spiders travel to Wichita State for a 7:30 PM tip. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.
