Spiders Extinguish Lady Flames to Remain Undefeated Inside Robins Center

RICHMOND, Va. – With a staggering 35 points in the second quarter, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team defeated the visiting Lady Flames Saturday afternoon, 99-73, inside the Robins Center. With the win, the Spiders improved to 9-2 overall and remain perfect at home with a 5-0 mark while Liberty fell to 3-9 on the year.

How it Happened
Siobhan Ryan put the Spiders on the board first with a wide-open trey before the Lady Flames responded with nine unanswered points to build a 9-3 lead with 6:52 left in the opening frame. Addie Budnik ended the scoring drought for the Spiders with her first triple of the contest, but the Lady Flames continued to put pressure on the Spider defense and regained a nine-point lead, 17-8 with 3:51 left on the clock. Four free throws from Grace Townsend sparked a 14-0 lead for the Spiders as Richmond ended the first quarter ahead 22-17.
The Spider offense didn't pump the breaks in the second quarter as the team outscored the opposition 35-17, the most points in a quarter this season and the most since the team took on Longwood last season on 12/11/22. After a few points from the opposition, Ally Sweeney was able to get a jumper off to spark a 12-0 run courtesy of efforts by Maggie Doogan, Rachel Ullstrom and Ryan for a 40-25 Spider lead. Ryan continued the offensive firepower for Richmond as she netted a trey and Ullstrom followed the play with two points of her own for a 48-29 UR lead with 2:30 left in the half. Doogan and Laren VanArsdale would later combine for six points as time expired to send Richmond into the locker room with a 23-point lead, 57-34.
Out of the break, Budnik and Ryan posted back-to-back treys for a 63-36 Spider lead. The Flames would continue to put points on the board throughout the third quarter, but Richmond would preserve its double-digit lead, 74-50 off a hoop-and-harm from Doogan. The Lady Flames would go on a short 7-0 run to cut the lead to 74-57, but Sweeney would end the quarter with a free throw to send Richmond into the final quarter leading 75-57.
Doogan completed another and-one play to open the fourth quarter before Liberty recorded a layup for a 78-59 Spider lead. Ullstrom and Doogan then combined for five points to push the Spider lead to 83-60 in favor of Richmond. The Lady Flames would go on a 10-0 run to cut the Spider lead to 15, 87-72 before Sweeney netted another trey to spark a 12-0 run for the Spiders for a 99-72 lead. The opposition would get one more free throw off as time expired as the Spiders took the game 99-73.

- Head Coach Aaron Roussell officially moves to No. 5 in all-time wins at Richmond with 74, surpassing Bill Hotchkiss (73 wins).
- As a team, the Spiders shot 32 of 59 (54.2%) from the field, 17 of 33 (51.5%) from deep and 18 of 22 (81.8%) from the free throw line. In addition, the team posted 27 rebounds, 22 assists five blocks, nine thefts and 25 points off 20 Lady Flame turnovers. The Spider bench also posted 31 points in the contest, led by Ullstrom.
