King, Roche Shoot Spiders Past William & Mary
12/02/2023 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — Jordan King and Jason Roche combined to make nine three-pointers as Richmond ran away from William & Mary for a 88-69 win at the Robins Center Saturday evening.
King finished with a game-high 29 points, going 11-15 from the field and 5-8 from three-point range. Roche made his first start of the season and responded with 14 points, shooting 4-6 from deep. Richmond improved to 5-3 and won its sixth straight home game in its series with the Tribe, a stretch that dates back to 2005.
"As a shooter no matter what you've just got to keep shooting," said Roche. "Luckily I had a couple of years of experience to lean back on and that kind of builds up your confidence even when you're going through a shooting lull. I knew I had it in me. I know I'm capable of having nights like this and even more."
For Roche, who entered Saturday 2-15 from three-point range over his last five games, it was his second start as a Spider and first since last year's road game vs William & Mary on December 3.
"He's a relentless worker," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney of Roche. "He has these great work habits and routines and he's always in the gym shooting. And I thought the one thing I could do for him is put him in the starting lineup. Let him get as many opportunities as possible and maybe just play rather than feel like a specialist."
King increased his scoring average to 21.0 points per game this season. His 168 points are the most by a Spider through eight games since 2015-16 (Terry Allen – 169).
"All the things he's doing on the court are tremendous," said Mooney of King. "But how he's embraced Richmond and being a leader and being a great teammate, those kinds of things, he's been great. His aggressiveness really, really helps us, not just scoring but mindset-wise."
William & Mary led 11-5 after the game's first six minutes, but the Spiders responded with a 16-0 run to take a 21-11 lead midway through the first half. After starting the game 2-9 from the field, Richmond made 16 of its final 20 field goal attempts in the first half and led 48-32 at the break.
The Tribe was able to close the gap to 11 early in the second half, but a 9-0 Richmond run bumped its lead to 20 and put the game out of reach.
Dji Bailey contributed 12 points off the bench. Neal Quinn finished with 10 points and led the Spiders with eight rebounds and five assists.
Richmond will travel to Northern Iowa Wednesday to face the Panthers. Tip-off time is 8 PM and the game can be seen on ESPN Plus.
