RICHMOND, Va. – For the third straight year, the most recent academic data from the NCAA shows that 96 percent of Richmond student-athletes successfully earned their undergraduate degrees or transferred from UR in good academic standing, according to graduation success rate (GSR) data released by the NCAA Wednesday. The data details the percent of student-athletes entering college in 2016 to graduate within six years of their matriculation, per the most recent statistics released by the Department of Education.
As a whole, 91 percent of all NCAA Division I student-athletes across the country are earning their degrees, the highest rate on record. The Spiders are well above the national average at 96 percent, a figure that is tied for fourth among the 15 schools in the Atlantic 10, Richmond's primary conference. Nationally, UR is tied for 40th among the more than 350 Division I programs.
Eight of Richmond's 15 varsity sport programs (cross-country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field teams are counted as one program for the purposes of the GSR) achieved perfect 100 percent GSR ratings: baseball, men's cross country, men's golf, women's soccer, women's swimming & diving, women's cross country/track & field, women's golf, and women's lacrosse. All of Richmond's 15 programs achieved GSR ratings of 88 percent or higher.
The GSR differs from the federal graduation-rate formula in that the GSR factors in transfer students who go on to graduate at a different institution and does not penalize schools for transfers who leave in good academic standing.
Each spring, the NCAA releases a separate set of data, called the Academic Progress Rate (APR), which measures both academic performance and retention. Each program receives an APR score, with teams falling under a certain threshold subject to penalties such as loss of scholarships and postseason bans. In the latest round of APR data, released in May, three Richmond programs received perfect scores of 1,000: men's cross country, field hockey, and women's golf.
For more information on GSR data, see the full release from the NCAA.
