MELBOURNE, Fla. — Playing in her first competitive event in more than 11 months, Spiders senior Muskan Uppal fired a 2-over 74 to lead Spider Women's Golf in the first round of the Columbia Classic at Duran Golf Club. Uppal, who started her round on the par-5 9th hole, bogeyed 10 and 11 before playing her final 15 holes in even par.
"I got off to a slow start, but I think the fact that it's been so long since I competed helped me because I knew I had to stay patient and I continued to get more and more comfortable as the round progressed," said Uppal. "I feel like I played really smart today and I don't think my freshmen or sophomore year self would have played that way so I'm proud of that. ... I was just super thankful that I'm healthy and having the opportunity to compete again."
Richmond is in eighth place in the 14-team field at 21-over par (+309). Uppal, who has battled injuries throughout the last two seasons, is tied for 18th on the individual leaderboard. She was one of just six golfers in the field of 80 to play the par threes in under par (-1) Saturday.
Junior Rory Weinfurther is tied for 41st at 5-over (77), one shot in front of sophomore Lauren Jones, who is tied for 48th.
Freshmen Hannah Lydic (8-over 80, tied for 54th) and Olivia Wilkie (10-over 82, tied for 67th) round out Richmond's lineup in the event.
Round 2 is scheduled for an 8:00 AM start Saturday, with Round 3 beginning Sunday at 8:30 AM.
