Spiders Open 2023 Conference Play with loss to VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a doubles win by Andrea Campodonico/ Polina Shitikova, and singles victories courtesy of Elizabeth Novak and Claire Le Du, the University of Richmond Women's Tennis team opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with a hard-fought, 5-2 loss to visiting VCU Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 4-11 on the year and 0-1 in the A-10 while the Rams improved to 5-9 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

In singles, Novak took her match over Gabriela Davidescu (VCU), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 on court four while Claire Le Du won her match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court six over Emma Valletta (VCU).

In doubles, Campodonico/Shitikova dealt with business, defeating Anastasia Smirnova/ Victoria Matasova (VCU) 6-3 on doubles court one.

The Spiders will be back in action on Sunday, facing off against Elon on the road on Mar. 26 at 2 p.m., before a three-match homestand beginning with Delaware on Mar. 30.
