03/02/2023 | Football
Richmond, Va. – University of Richmond Head Football Coach Russ Huesman announced the addition of three new coaches to his staff Thursday. Jacob Huesman is named Quarterbacks Coach, Rob Noel is named Defensive Line Coach and Jameson Zacharias is named Cornerbacks Coach.
Russ Huesman's son Jacob will lead the Richmond quarterbacks after previously coaching the tight ends at his alma mater Chattanooga.
Huesman served on the Mocs staff since 2019 and led KeShawn Toney to Freshman All-America honors in 2021. During his first year on staff at Chattanooga he helped transition Chris James from quarterback to tight end, leading to an All-Southern Conference First Team selection and preseason 2020 All-America accolade. James' seven receiving touchdowns in 2019 led the Mocs and set a school record for tight ends.
Huesman played for the Mocs from 2011-2015 where he was a three-time SoCon Offensive Player of the Year and holds nearly every offensive program record.
With his dad a head coach, the All-America selection in 2015 led the Mocs to the FCS Playoffs Second Round in 2015 and the Quarterfinals a year earlier. He became just the fourth FCS student-athlete to post 40 rushing (43) and passing (64) touchdowns in a career and only the second to rush (4,051) and pass (8,197) for 4,000+ yards in a career.
Rob Noel joins the Spiders as Defensive Line Coach after previously serving as the defensive coordinator at Colonial Athletic Association foe Stony Brook since 2020. Prior to taking over the Seawolves defense, Noel worked as the defensive line coach since 2014 and became the defense run game coordinator prior to the 2019 season.
During his first season at Stony Brook, Noel guided Victor Ochi to All-America status and All-CAA Football honors while Ochi became the Seawolves' all-time leader in both sacks and tackles-for-loss. In 2015, Ochi went on to become the CAA Football's Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-America status.
Noel guided the Seawolves defensive that ranked third in the FCS in total defense in 2017 and first in the FCS with six defensive touchdowns in 2018. He helped the Seawolves to back-to-back FCS Playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018.
Noel was a four-year letterwinner for the Butler Bulldogs, graduating with a school-record 44 games played, including 29-straight starts along the offensive line. He earned All-Pioneer League selection as a senior and was a two-time Academic All-Conference selection.
Jameson Zacharias comes to Richmond after spending the 2022 season at Georgetown where he was the secondary coach, leading Wedner Cadet to a Second Team All-Patriot League honor as a defensive back in 2022. Prior to his time at Georgetown, Zacharias spent four seasons with Fordham and has had previous coaching stints at IUP, Central Michigan and CAA member Towson.
In his time at Fordham,he guided eight players to All-Patriot League selections, including 2021 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Greenhagen. At Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2017-18), Zacharias guided Crimson Hawk cornerback JR Stevens to the All-PSAC Second Team and First Team All-Region honors.
Prior to his two years at IUP, Zacharias coached the outside linebackers and cornerbacks for two seasons at Central Michigan, owning the sixth-ranked pass defense in the Mid-American Conference in 2016 and giving up just under 223 yards per game through the air. Junior cornerback Amari Coleman tied the MAC lead with four interceptions, returning two for touchdowns to earn All-MAC First Team honors.
The 2013 graduate of Monmouth picked up his bachelor's degree in criminal justice after playing four seasons for the Hawks.
The Spiders 2023 season kicks off Sept. 2 when Richmond hosts Morgan State. Game times are yet to be determined.
