NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— The Atlantic 10 Conference has named 40-year Richmond broadcasting veteran Bob Black as its 2023 Bob Vetrone Media Award winner. Black will be honored at the 2023 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Atlantic 10 Assistant Commissioner Drew Dickerson surprised Bob Black with the news that he is this year's winner during Black's daily radio show on ESPN Richmond.
The award recognizes those whose service, professionalism and commitment have made a lasting contribution to its student-athletes and institutions. The Atlantic 10 instituted the award in 2006 to honor the memory of the late Bob Vetrone. Vetrone's involvement in basketball covered the spectrum, first as a sportswriter, then with the Big Five, and then as assistant sports information director at La Salle.
As the "Voice of the Spiders," Black currently serves as the Director of Broadcast & News Content at Richmond. He is a voice synonymous with Richmond Athletics, serving as the play-by-play for Spider football and men's basketball broadcasts on radio, television and SpiderTV/ESPN+. Black has been on the call for every Richmond NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament game, including the 1988 and 2011 Sweet 16 appearances and last year's A-10 Championship run that led to a win over Iowa in the NCAA First Round.
Black began calling Spider athletic events during the 1983-84 basketball season, the same year Richmond made its first NCAA Tournament appearance. Black joined the athletic department staff full time when he was named Director of Broadcast & Internet Properties in 2001. Black was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Communications in 2005, directing five full-time staff members in the athletic public relations department. Black's responsibilities also include managing Spider radio, television and internet properties. Black also hosts radio sports talk show in Richmond, Va., and he is a four-time (1997, 2000, 2008, 2010) Virginia Sportscaster of the Year award winner.
