Men’s Basketball Registers Highest Attendance Among Smaller D-I Schools
03/21/2023 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — An average crowd of 6,285 fans attended Richmond Men's Basketball home games in 2022-23, nearly double the school's undergraduate enrollment of 3,164. For the second straight season, Richmond was the smallest school in Division I to average at least 6,000 fans, narrowly edging out Siena (undergrad enrollment of 3,498).
Attendance at Spider Men's Basketball home games this season increased by 3.5 percent over 2021-22 (6,072), spurred by five sellout crowds, the most in any season since 2017-18.
"We are extremely appreciative of everyone who came to a Spiders game this season," said Assistant AD for Strategic Ticketing and Sales Brad Dilen. "This was the first year at Richmond for our entire Marketing and Ticketing staff, and we were really pleased by the level of support for the team. We had a great core of season tickets holders and we continued to welcome kids and families to Robins Center through our historically successful programs like Kids Club, and Scholastic Stars. We also had great success bringing in various other youth groups by providing fund raising opportunities. We're already looking forward to filling the arena again next season."
Richmond finished the season 79th among Division I schools in average attendance, marking the first time the program has ranked among the nation's top 80 schools in attendance in back-to-back seasons since 1991-92 and 1992-93.
Among its Atlantic 10 peers, Richmond ranked fourth in attendance, trailing Dayton, VCU and Saint Louis. Richmond's crowd size during the season represented 87.3 percent of the capacity of the 7,201-seat Robins Center, a figure that ranked third in the A-10 and 22nd across Division I.
