ORLANDO, Fla. — The Richmond Spiders Men's Golf team combined for a 9-over par 297 in Round 1 of the Atlantic 10 Championship Friday and is tied for seventh in the field of 12. Richmond is level with George Mason and Fordham, one shot behind sixth-place Dayton and two strokes behind fifth-place George Washington.
The Spiders hovered near the top of the leaderboard for much of the round before dropping shots late in the day as the skies cleared and the winds picked up on the Nicklaus Course at Reunion Resort. The Spiders combined for three bogeys, two double bogeys and no birdies on holes 7-8-9, their final three holes of the day.
Richmond was led by sophomore Cole Ekert and freshman Drew Carlin, who both shot even-par 72 and are tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard. Ekert's five birdies, tied for second most in the field, helped offset a triple bogey he made after finding the water hazard with his tee shot on the par-3 16th hole.
Carlin holed a 10-footer to save bogey after his drive found an awkward lie on his first hole of the day, the par-4 10th. He rebounded to birdie three of the four par-5s and added 12 pars, tied for fifth most of any player in the field.
Carlin helped the Spiders to a combined score of 8-under par on the four par-5s on the Nicklaus Course, the best par-5 scoring of any team Friday.
Ben Cooper is tied for 29th after carding a 3-over 75. He's three shots in front of Michael Childress, who is tied for 46th at 6-over par. Garrett Clark is two shots further back in a tie for 52nd at 8-over.
The Spiders will tee off on the 10th hole in Round 2 tomorrow beginning at 8:20 a.m. Richmond will be paired with George Mason and Fordham.
