GREENVILLE, N.C. — The Richmond Spiders played the first two rounds of the Ironwood Invitational in a combined score of 26 strokes over par Monday, ending the day tied for seventh among the 11 teams competing in the event. It was Richmond's first time playing two tournament rounds in a single day since last September at the Nittany Lion Invitational.
"It was definitely a long day and took a few holes into the second 18 to get used to it," said junior Rory Weinfurther. "But, we all came in prepared to play 36. A lot of today was about being resilient and pushing through each hole. One of the biggest adjustments was making sure to have enough energy for the day by going to bed early and eating throughout the round. Overall we did a really good job staying patient."
The Spiders carded a 12-over par 300 in the first round Monday morning and a 14-over par 302 in the second round Monday afternoon. With Tuesday's final round to play, Richmond is tied with Jacksonville State for seventh place on the leaderboard, one shot behind Florida Gulf Coast and one shot in front of Coastal Carolina.
Weinfurther and Hannah Lydic are tied for 25th among the 63 golfers in the field at 6-over par (150). An even-par 72 in the opening round had Weinfurther inside the top 10 before she carded a 6-over 78 Monday afternoon. Lydic recorded seven birdies, tied for fourth most among all golfers. She followed an opening-round 77 with a 1-over 73 in Round 2.
"I was just determined to play the second 18 better than the front," said Lydic. "Playing 36 is basically like running a marathon. You start out slow and try to get faster each split. I just tried to play each hole better than I did the first time. I also had a better understanding of how the greens would react to putts and approach shots which helped me out too."
Vicky Zhu is tied for 34th at 8-over par (152), one shot in front of teammates Lauren Jones and Olivia Wilkie, who are tied for 37th at 153 (+9).
A pair of Spiders are competing as individuals at the event. Claire Yioulos is tied for 44th at 156 (+12) and Kendall Miller is in 60th at 160 (+16).
Richmond, who finished 12th out of 13 teams in this event last year, will start the third and final round Tuesday at 8:25 a.m.
The Spiders will seek to solve the par 3s at Ironwood Country Club. UR played par 3s in a combined 16-over par Monday, last in the field.
