RICHMOND, Va. — The University of Richmond Athletics Department held the second event of its Millhiser Dialogue Series on April 28th in Spider Hall before an audience of Richmond coaches, faculty, and staff. This session was entitled "How Do Coaches Actualize Success for Student-Athletes?" and featured Swimming & Diving Head Coach Matt Barany, Men's Basketball Head Coach Chris Mooney, and Women's Basketball Assistant Coach Jeanine Radice.
The Millhiser Dialogue Series is an ongoing series of moderated discussions between members of the campus community, focusing on issues at the intersection of sport and society. The dialogues are designed to educate and promote discussion around important issues that resonate across different spaces and places in intercollegiate athletics.
Barany, Mooney, and Radice discussed their strategies and tactics behind the pursuit of success, stretching from player recruitment through competition and beyond. All three coaches echoed similar themes for success that centered around effort, honesty, teamwork, and accountability.
"Coaches Barany, Mooney, and Radice are experts in the field of student-athlete success and it was illuminating to learn the differences in how they approach the common goal of athletic and academic excellence," said Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt. "I'd like to thank them and our Academic Services staff for their time Friday morning and their continued efforts to create an unparalleled student-athlete experience here at Richmond."
"Listening to coaches from different sports speak about success reminds us how athletic experiences can transcend the world of sport and impact our everyday lives," moderator and Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support & Student Services Bruce Matthews said.
Audience member Laura Thompson, Assistant Dean in the Robins School of Business, reflected that the coaches' attention to "daily consistency and self-discipline highlight why student-athletes at Richmond also achieve success in our classrooms and in their future endeavors."
