RICHMOND, Va. — Peter Thomas has been promoted to Associate Head Coach of the Richmond Men's Basketball team, Head Coach Chris Mooney announced Tuesday. Thomas, a 2007 UR graduate, served as an Assistant Coach for the Spiders last season and was elevated to Interim Head Coach for the final six games of the season while Mooney stepped away from the team to undergo a heart procedure.
Thomas is in his second stint with the Spiders. He served as the program's Director of Basketball Operations from 2008-13 and returned to Richmond in May 2022. In between, he spent nine seasons on the staff at Campbell University, including the final five as Associate Head Coach for the Camels.
"Peter has earned this promotion with his great work since returning to Richmond last year, especially at the end of last season when he stepped into a very difficult situation and kept our team together over our final six games," said Mooney. "I'm looking forward to his continued contributions to our players and to our program in his new role as Associate Head Coach."
In Thomas' first game as Interim Head Coach, he led the Spiders to a 15-point comeback win over preseason A-10 co-favorite Saint Louis in the Robins Center. At the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Brooklyn, Thomas and the Spiders posted a 33-point victory over Massachusetts, the second largest margin of victory in the history of the event. After the season, he was named Richmond Athletics Assistant Coach of the Year by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
As a player, Thomas was a two-time Academic All-Atlantic 10 selection who served as captain of the 2006-07 Spiders.
