Men's Basketball Adds Incoming Freshman Mikkel Tyne
06/09/2023 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — Mikkel Tyne, a 5'10" guard from Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland, Md., has signed with Richmond Men's Basketball and will join the program for the 2023-24 season, the team announced Friday. Tyne chose Richmond from a group of Division I offers, including Drake and Western Kentucky. ESPN lists Tyne as the 10th-ranked recruit from Maryland in the Class of 2023.
Tyne and Bishop Walsh competed against some of the top high school teams in the nation last season as members of the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC). They capped the season with a pair of wins in the prestigious Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament. At Bishop Walsh, Tyne was coached by Dan Prete, who coached UR's No. 2 all-time leading scorer Grant Golden at Saint James School (Md.) earlier in his career.
Tyne has competed with Team Melo in the Nike EYBL, the nation's premier circuit for AAU teams, this spring. He has averaged 11.2 points and 2.8 assists per game while leading his team to a 10-7 record. Tyne, a Toronto native, also represented Canada at the FIBA U18 Americas Championship and FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup in 2022. 2023-24 will be the seventh straight season Richmond has a player from Canada on its roster, a stretch that started in 2017-18 with Nathan Cayo.
Richmond's incoming freshman class now includes four members. Tyne joins Jack Graham from Smithfield, R.I., Collin Tanner from Creedmor, N.C., and Trevor Smith from Newport News, Va.
