Six Spiders Named VaSID Academic All-State

Richmond, Va. – Six University of Richmond student-athletes were named to the 2022-23 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team. In order to qualify, student-athletes must be a sophomore in academic standing with a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade point average.
Richmond's honorees include women's basketball's Addie Budnik, field hockey's Tess Keppel, swimming and diving's Claire O'Shaughnessy, women's lacrosse's Arden Tierney, women's cross country and track's Madison Trippett and men's lacrosse's Dalton Young,
Budnik earns her second-straight academic All-State honor. The business administration major is a three-time Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and has been named to the 2022-23 A-10 All-Academic Team, the A-10 All-Conference Second Team and to the A-10 All-Championship team. The Highland Park, Ill. native averaged 14 points and 5.5 rebounds per game during the 2022-23 season and became the 27th Spider to reach the 1,000-career point milestone.
Keppel graduated in May with degrees in Biology and Health Studies after competing for four years as a defensive leader on the field hockey squad. During her senior season, Keppel led the A-10 and finished seventh nationally with five defensive saves, including two against Wake Forest. She also scored twice in 2022, first against James Madison and converted a penalty stroke against Towson, while collecting four assists for eight points. Keppel will continue her education and playing career at Michigan State in 2023. The Baltimore, Md. native finished her UR career with 16 total points, on three goals and 10 assists, with seven defensive saves in 62 games played.
O'Shaughnessy has earned three-straight Academic-All state nods. The psychology major is a four-time A-10 Academic Honor Roll selection and her final academic term was highlighted by earning the Scholar Athlete of the Year award from the University of Richmond Athletics Department and the A-10 Post Graduate Award. In the water, O'Shaughnessy aided in the Spiders second place finish at the 2023 A-10 Championships as a member of the 800 free relay bronze medal squad and placed fourth in the 200 free.
Tierney adds her third Academic All-State award as wraps up her career at Richmond. The business administration major is a four-time A-10 Academic Honor Roll recipient. The 2023 team captain earned a slew of honors including IWLCA All-American, USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American, Inside Lacrosse All-American, Robins School of Business Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, College Sports Communicators Academic-District, First-Team All-Conference, A-10 All-Tournament, A-10 All-Academic and IWLCA All-Region Second-Team. She finished the season ranked second nationally in draw controls per game (8.00) and eighth in assists per game (2.00). She played a large role in helping Richmond reach No. 2 nationally in scoring offense, No. 3 in points per game, No. 1 in draw controls per game and No. 4 in draw controls percentage. She broke the single season draw control program record (now set at 189) and the career draw control program record (now set at 405).
Trippett earns her first Academic-All-State selection as a biology and health studies double major. Following the winter season, she was named to the A-10 Indoor Track and Field All-Academic team. She is a A-10 Conference Academic Honor roll recipient and capped her junior year as the Collegiate Road Mile National Champion. With additional success in both her indoor and outdoor seasons, Trippett collected two gold medals (indoor mile and outdoor 1500m) and a bronze medal (indoor 5000m) at the conference championship meets.
A business administration major, Young led Richmond men's lacrosse's offense in 2023, tallying 32 goals and 41 assists for 73 points en route to being named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year. Young recorded 26 ground balls and caused three turnovers on the season and scored his 100th career goal against St. Bonaventure April 29 to become just the fourth Spider to ever reach 100. Young was prolific in the A-10 semifinal game, helping Richmond secure a 15-8 win over UMass to punch its ticket to, and ultimately win, the inaugural Atlantic 10 championship title. During the semifinals, Young tied a career-high eight points by scoring a season-high five goals and adding three assists. A standout in the classroom as well as the field, Young was honored as a member of the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team.
