Spiders join Colorado, Florida State, UNLV in 2023 Sunshine Slam
08/16/2023 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Spiders Men's Basketball Team will participate in the 2023 Sunshine Slam along with Colorado, Florida State, and UNLV, the Gazelle Group announced Wednesday. The event will be held on November 20-21 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Richmond will face Colorado in the second semifinal on November 20 at 8 PM on CBS Sports Network. The Spiders will then face either Florida State or UNLV on November 21, with the championship game taking place at 4 PM on CBS Sports Network and the 3rd place game tipping at 6:30 PM. Advance tickets may be purchased through Ticketmaster.
November 20 will be the third all-time meeting between the Spiders and Colorado. The teams split a home-and-home series during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons, with UR winning at Colorado 75-61 on Dec. 31, 2003 and the Buffaloes winning 75-69 at the Robins Center on Jan. 4, 2005. Richmond holds a 3-1 series edge vs Florida State, but the teams haven't met since 1967. UR has never faced UNLV.
As part of the event, Richmond will host Siena in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, November 11 in the first meeting between the schools since 1994.
UR's journey to Daytona Beach will be one of two trips the Spiders make to Florida during their non-conference schedule. UR will also face Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Fla. on Saturday, December 9.
The remainder of Richmond's non-conference schedule will be announced at a later date. 2022-23 season ticket holders are able to renew their seats by calling the Richmond Athletics Ticket Office at 1-877-SPIDER1 or logging into their account and completing the Season Renewal Application. Fans interested in purchasing season tickets for the first time can submit a $50 deposit online. New season ticket holders will be contacted in late September to choose their seats for the season, and single-game tickets will go on sale in October.
