NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Richmond Women's Soccer team has the honor of highlighting senior Taylor Montague as this week's Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Gwen Howell as Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
The Spiders are coming off a solid week of opening competition, posting the programs first opening win since 2016 against Longwood (W, 1-0) on Aug. 17 and a hard-fought draw against Nevada (T, 0-0) on Sunday in the 2023 home opener.
Montague, a Durham, N.C. native, led the Spiders to two complete shutouts, putting up six saves through 22 shots faced for a 1-0-1 record and notched her ninth and 10th career shutouts. In the victory against the Lancers on Thursday, Montague faced 11 shots while coming up with a key save in the 69th minute to preserve the clean sheet. Against Nevada, Montague recorded five saves through 90 minutes.
Howell, a Mars, Pa. native, was a key component on the Spider back line this week. In the season opener, Howell made her collegiate debut and first collegiate start and played all 90 minutes on the back line. In the match against Nevada, Howell again played the full 90 minutes and helped her team preserve the clean sheet.
The Spiders are back in action on Thursday, playing host to William & Mary at 5 p.m. at President's Field at River Road, and on Aug. 27 versus ODU at 6 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
