Spiders Fall to William & Mary Thursday Afternoon at Home

RICHMOND, Va. – With an unfortunate own goal in the 15th minute, the University of Richmond Women's Soccer team dropped a hard-fought battle, 1-0, to visiting William & Mary Thursday afternoon at Presidents Field. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 1-1-1 on the young season while the Tribe improved to 2-0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Tribe applied pressure to the Spider back line throughout the opening minutes, a hard-hit cross was sent into the box where the cross deflected off a Spider player and past senior keeper Taylor Montague. In the final minutes of the game, senior Casey Merz had a dangerous header for the potential equalizer, but narrowly missed to the left of the goal.
NOTES ON THE GAME
The Spiders will look to bounce back on Sunday, as the team travels to ODU to take on the Monarch in Norfolk, Va. at 6 p.m. The Spiders will return to President's field on Aug. 31 at 4:30 p.m. against Radford.

- The goal in the 15th minute marks the first goal conceded by the Spider defense this season.
- Senior Elyse Kimball led the team with two shots while graduate Molly Wierman and junior Sofia Mancino each collected a shot on target.
- Caitlin Sutton, Taylor Montague, Elle Dziadzio and Casey Merz each played the full 90 minutes.
- In goal, Montague recorded four saves through 17 shots.
- The Tribe picked up a yellow card in the 90th minute.
- W&M outshot the Spiders 17-6 in the match while the Tribe had 12 fouls on the afternoon compared to the eight from Richmond.
