PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. — With a young lineup playing in its first tournament of the year, consistency wasn't something to be expected from the Richmond Spiders at this week's Golfweek Fall Challenge. But Richmond's results from day to day at the 54-hole event were nearly identical. UR finished the tournament with a team score 294 in Tuesday's final round, equaling their total from Monday and one shot better than their result in Sunday's Round 1.
"I thought we learned a lot and I saw lots of good things," said Coach Calle Barlow Tuesday afternoon, shortly after the Spiders had posted a three-day score of 31-over par (883), tied for 10th in the 18-team event.
Sophomore Hannah Lydic was the top Richmond finisher on the individual leaderboard, tying for 10th place at 3-over par (216) to register the third top-10 finish of her career and her first since last September.
Freshman Maya Beasley tied for 41st at 10-over par (223) in her collegiate debut, one shot in front of juniors Christine Mandile and Lauren Jones, who tied for 45th. Mandile followed her career-low 2-over 73 Monday with another round of 73 Tuesday. Jones led the Spiders with a 1-over 72 Tuesday, equalling her lowest round over the last two seasons.
Sophomore Olivia Wilkie finished 12-over par (225) and in a tie for 45th place with four other golfers, among them Spider senior Rory Weinfurther, who was competing as an individual.
The Spiders registered 169 pars during the event, tied for fourth-most of any team, and played the par 3s at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in 3-over par, tied for second best of any program.
"We did not make enough birdies so we will be working on birdie putts and getting them to the hole," said Barlow. "The thing I will stress to team is rest and recovery with this quick turnaround. We will be going to cooler weather which is something that will be very different than what we had here in South Carolina."
The Spiders will compete this weekend at the Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa.
