McGonigal, Fahed Add Assistant Coach Titles
09/15/2023 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — In the wake of the NCAA's decision to allow two additional coaches in men's and women's basketball, Mark McGonigal and Jack Fahed have been promoted to Assistant Coach, Chris Mooney announced Friday. McGonigal, who has been a member of the Richmond staff since 2016, now has the title of Assistant Coach/Director of Basketball Operations & Recruiting. Fahed, who joined the Spiders in 2022, is now the team's Assistant Coach/Director of Program Development.
"I'm glad the new rules recognize the important role played by each and every member of our staff. This allows us to give two extremely deserving young men the title of 'Coach,' which they've earned through their hard work and dedication to our program," said Mooney.
In their new roles, McGonigal and Fahed will be permitted to perform the same on- and off-court tasks as the rest of the coaching staff, with the exception of off-campus recruiting.
"Mark has given so much to Richmond basketball for more than a decade, first as a player, then as a staff member, and now as a coach. His experience as a former player at UR is extremely valuable, and I'm happy that we're removing barriers to him working with our current team in ways that will allow our players to take full advantage of his perspective and knowledge."
McGonigal first arrived at Richmond in 2005 and graduated in 2009 after appearing in 27 games for the Spiders. He returned to UR in 2016 as the team's Director of Program Development, and was elevated to Director of Operations in 2019. Last offseason, he added Director of Recruiting to his title as he assumed oversight of all of UR's basketball recruiting operations.
The Spiders have produced nine different All-Atlantic 10 honorees since McGonigal joined the staff in 2016, as well as winning the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship and matching a school record with 24 regular season wins in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season.
"Jack has really impressed me over the last year-and-a-half, and I feel like he's ready to step into a coaching role," said Mooney of Fahed. "He has an incredible work ethic and a great rapport with our players and I know they'll benefit from having him in this new position."
Fahed served as Richmond's Video Coordinator last season before being promoted to Director of Program Development in May. Fahed was a graduate assistant at JMU during the 2021-22 season after spending four years as a team manager with the Dukes. He graduated with a degree in Business Management from JMU in 2021.
