Wheeler Named Semifinalist for Prestigious Campbell Trophy

Richmond, Va. – University of Richmond football captain Tristan Wheeler has been selected as a semifinalist for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, as announced by the National Football Foundation on Wednesday.
The Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation for combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. There was a record 201 student-athletes selected as semifinalists across all divisions, with the group having a combined grade point average of 3.62.
Wheeler is one of the top defensive players in all of NCAA FCS Football and has been a force since he stepped on campus, making 41-straight starts in 44 appearances at linebacker. Named the CAA's 2022 Chuck Boone Leadership Award recipient, Wheeler exemplifies the highest standards of leadership, integrity, teamwork and sportsmanship in his academic and athletic achievements A four-time All-CAA and All-America selection, Wheeler currently ranks fifth all-time for the Spiders and is on pace to finish his career second all-time in career tackles and is the active leader among all levels of the NCAA (FBS, FCS, DII, DIII) in career tackles.
Wheeler has accomplished all this and more while working towards a degree in health studies from one of the most academically rigorous institutions in the country while staying active in the community.
Wheeler is among 39 players recognized from the FCS level and CAA Football's six honorees were second only to the Ivy League's seven.
The NFF will announce finalists on Oct. 25, where all finalists will receive a postgraduate scholarship of $18,000. The Campbell Trophy recipient, which will be announced in Las Vegas on Dec. 5, will have their scholarship increased to $25,000.
