Spiders Ground Flyers Saturday Night, Push Hot Streak to Eight Straight

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind 21 points from Maggie Doogan, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team posted a dominating 72-39 win over visiting Dayton Saturday night inside the Robins Center. With the win, the Spiders pushed their winning streak to eight-straight games, remain undefeated both inside the Robins Center (9-0) and Atlantic 10 Conference play at a 7-0 mark. Richmond brought its overall record to 17-3 while the Flyers fell to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

How it Happened
Addie Budnik opened the game with a triple, and Grace Townsend followed the play with a layup to give UR an early 5-0 lead. Doogan then netted a turnaround jumper following a hoop-and-harm from the opposition, which sparked a 10-0 run for UR, ending the first quarter with a 15-3 Richmond lead.
Budnik continued her offensive presence in the second quarter, netting a jumper and a trey within the first two minutes for a 20-3 Spider lead. The Flyers then posted a short 4-0 spurt, but the offensive traction was cut by none other than Budnik, who posted two free throws for a 22-7 Spider lead. After exchanging a few buckets, Doogan and Townsend combined for four points to send Richmond into the locker room with a 15-point lead, 30-15.
Out of the break, Doogan sparked a 5-0 run for a 35-15 Spider lead before UD posted back-to-back layups to cut the deficit to 35-19. Rachel Ullstrom then sparked a 7-0 run with efforts from Laren VanArsdale to lift Richmond to 42-19 with 2:11 left in the quarter. Following a jumper from VanArsdale, Dayton got one final layup off to end the quarter with Richmond ahead, 44-24.
Doogan posted a trey to open the final 10 minutes and followed with a layup to spark a dominating 12-0 run for a 59-26 Spider lead with 5:44 left on the clock. After UD ended the scoring drought with a jumper, Dayton was able to scratch back to a 28 point deficit, 61-33, but a layup from Ullstrom saw a 6-0 run for the Spiders to push the lead back up to 67-33. Kylee Lewandowski would post five points over two minutes to put Richmond into the win column, 72-39.

Richmond continues conference play on Wednesday, as the team travels to Duquesne for a midweek matchup against the Dukes at 6 p.m., and will travel to defending A-10 Champion Saint Louis on Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. ET. The Spiders will return to the Robins Center on Feb. 3 for the Play4Kay game against Fordham at 6 p.m.
