Men’s Tennis Concludes Elon Invite with Strong Singles and Doubles Performances

ELON, N.C. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team showcased a solid outing at the Elon Invitational over the weekend, posting nine wins in the singles competition and four doubles wins against a diverse field.

In singles, Richmond's Paxton Pritchard opened with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Elon's Jack Curtis but later fell in matches against Mikalai Bankou (S.C. State) and Gloria Brett (Charlotte). Sam Rathmanner claimed a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-3, over Aissa Benchakroun (S.C. State), while Dylan Atkinson secured two victories, besting NCCU's Rodrigo Alves 7(7)-6(0), 6-1 and Kareem Hakim 6-3, 6-3.

Zach Portnoy notched two victories in a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 over Adi Dagan (Campbell) and a 6-3, 7-5 against Peter Glenn (Charlotte). Grant Cohen split his singles matches, defeating Oliver Saarinen (NCCU) 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Otto Sewell downed Cole Burnam (Furman) 6-1, 6-0 in his first match before falling to ETSU's Juan Andres Listo.

In doubles, the pairing of Pritchard and Rathmanner excelled with two 6-4 victories over teams from Elon and Furman, while Sewell and Atkinson opened with a 6-2 win against ETSU's Listo and James Sim. The duo of Portnoy and Mark Taranov closed the event with a win after their opponents from N.C. A&T retired due to injury.

The Spiders will look ahead to the Wake Forest Invite in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Nov. 1-3 before rounding out the fall slate at the Virginia Tech Dynamic Duo on Nov. 8-10 in Blacksburg, Va.
