Barbulescu Wins A-10 Masters Qualifier Singles Bracket, Advances to Conference Masters

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sofia Barbulescu captured the Atlantic 10 Masters Qualifier singles tournament title this past weekend, securing a spot in the upcoming Conference Masters on Nov. 7.
Barbulescu displayed dominance throughout the tournament, defeating opponents from Fordham, Dayton, URI and VCU. She picked up a commanding 6-1, 6-3 win over Fordham's Paola Ueno Dalmonico, a 6(1)-4, 6-3 decision over URI's Katharina Spieth, and a 6-2, 6-0 victory over VCU's Mariam Ibraham Mohamed Metwally.
Novak also contributed a singles victory for the Spiders, besting Neena Katauskas (Dayton) 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, Barbulescu and Novak reached the final round of the qualifying tournament. The duo collected three decisive victories, including two 8-3 wins over Saint Louis and Dayton and an 8-2 win over Davidson, before falling 6-1, 6-4 in the final against Neena Katauskas and Julianne Nguyen (Dayton).
Barbulescu will represent Richmond at the Conference Masters tournament on Nov. 7 with the site to be determined.
