VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Sophomore Maya Beasley led the Spiders women's golf team with a 3-over 73 in Round 1 of the Evie Odom Invitational Friday at Princess Anne Country Club. Beasley managed 13 pars, four bogeys, and one birdie, dropping a curling 30-foot putt for a birdie 2 on the difficult par-3 2nd hole.
"It felt great to finally play in some nice conditions especially because our last two events have been in the rain," said Beasley. "I was just happy to be out there today. It was a beautiful day and the course was in great shape."
As a team, the Spiders combined for a 23-over 303 in Round 1 and are in 13th place in the imposing 14-team field.
Beasley is tied for 27th among 78 golfers. Junior Olivia Wilkie is also in the top half of the field, tied for 38th at 4-over par.
The three other Spiders competing, freshmen Katie Magner and Caroline Thompson and junior Hannah Lydic, shot 8-over 78s and are among a group of seven golfers tied for 64th.
Richmond combined for 58 pars Monday, third most in the field, but UR's six birdies were tied for the fewest of any team.
The Spiders will start Saturday's Round 2 at 9:40 AM on the 10th hole.
