Novak and Barbulescu Shine at River City Tennis Open

RICHMOND, Va. – Elizabeth Novak led the University of Richmond women's tennis team this past weekend with a stellar performance at the River City Open, finishing the tournament undefeated in both singles and doubles play.
Novak partnered with Sofia Barbulescu in doubles, where the duo defeated Bryan/Starodubtseva (Hampton), 7-6(4), in a hard-fought opening match. The duo followed with two more victories, including a decisive 6-4 win over Verduzco/Matuseviciute (GW) to cap off their doubles campaign.
Novak continued to show dominance in singles, defeating Serena Bryan (Hampton) 6-2, 7-5, and Molly Evans (Georgetown) 6-4, 6-4. Novak completed the tournament with a perfect 3-0 singles record after a dominant performance against Meiri Okuwaki on Sunday, securing a 3-6, 6-3, [10-6] victory in the final round.
Barbulescu also had a strong showing in singles action, beginning her weekend with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over Okuwaki. She continued her strong performance in the second round of matches, defeating Emily Novikov (Georgetown) 6-1, 5-7, [10-3]. Barbulescu capped off her singles play with a decisive 6-3, 6-0 win against Karen Verduzco, finishing with an impressive 3-1 singles record.
Lainey O'Neil and Lucy Webber also went undefeated at 3-0 in doubles, including wins over Sofia Sokolova and Melis Sakiroglu (Hampton).
The Spiders continue their fall slate at the ITA Regionals on Oct. 17-22 before the Conference Masters Qualifying in Davidson, N.C. on Oct. 25-27.
