Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Fall Season at Navy Invite with Four Spiders Undefeated

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The University of Richmond men's tennis team wrapped up its 2024 fall slate this past weekend at the Navy Invitational, highlighted by four Spiders finishing out the invite undefeated through singles action in Grant Cohen, Mark Taranov, Otto Sewell and Sam Rathmanner.
In singles, Taranov defeated Navy's Graydon Buckingham 6-4, 7-5 and outlasted Kyle Weekes (Binghamton) in a hard-fought 6-3, 0-6, 7(7)-6 (3) victory. Taranov concluded th invite with a 6-3, 6-1 win over A-10 foe Hector Fullone (SJU). Cohen, consistent throughout the weekend, captured three victories, including a 6-3, 6-2 win over Navy's Jonathan Lee, a 6-4, 6-1 win over Eli Gan-Dy (SJU) and a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over James McPherson (Binghamton).
Sewell added to the team's success with two gritty three-set victories, including a comeback win against Dennis Wiebe (James Madison), 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 and collected wins over Alessandro Danna (Long Island) 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 and Nathan Nguyen (Navy), 7-5, 7-5. Rathmanner was the final Spider to finish the invite undefeated as the freshman picked up two 6-1, 6-4 wins over Zubin Omar (Binghamton) and Harrison Lee (JMU) before defeating Victor Sjostrom (LIU) 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, the pairing of Cohen and Rathmanner went undefeated with three victories, including a commanding 6-0 win over Navy's Edwards/Lee, a 7-5 win over Singh/Oumar (Bucknell) and a 6-2 win over Danna/Hornung (LIU). The duo of Taranov and Portnoy added two wins as well, defeating both Weekes/McPherson (BU) and Sanchez/Wiebe (JMU), 7-5.
