Spiders Drop Double-Overtime Decision at Bucknell
11/16/2024 | Men's Basketball
LEWISBURG, Pa. — A sizable first-half lead and buzzer-beating three-pointer weren't enough to spare the Richmond Spiders a road loss at Bucknell Saturday. Richmond led by as many as 21 in the first half and forced a second overtime period on a fadeaway three-pointer by Mikkel Tyne as time expired in the first OT, but ultimately fell 80-76 to the Bison. The loss dropped Richmond to 1-3 this season.
More than half of the Spiders scoring came from DeLonnie Hunt (26 points, one off his career high) and Jonathan Beagle (career-best 23 points), who started at center in place of an injured Mike Walz.
"I thought Jonathan played great. I though he did everything for us," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. "He made all his foul shots. He was aggressive. He had a defensive assignment that was also tough, so I thought Jonathan played well and hopefully we can build off of that with him."
Beagle was tasked with guarding Bucknell's 7-foot center Noah Williamson, who scored 22 of his 26 points after halftime after Beagle was forced to the bench after picking up his third foul on the opening play of the second half.
Richmond subsequently found its lead, which was 35-14 with 1:49 left in the first half, chipped away as Williamson established himself in the paint.
"Obviously you anticipate a punch from the other team," said Mooney of the second half. "They came out and they were in a better rhythm. They worked some things out to be able to get the ball inside. Williamson was very effective."
The Spiders trailed by five with two minutes left in regulation, but a jumper and pair of free throws from Beagle narrowed the gap. Then a driving layup from Hunt with 15 seconds left tied the score at 61 and forced OT.
Again in overtime, Richmond railed to extend the game. Tyne tied the score at 68 with a double-clutch fadeaway three-pointer as the buzzer sounded following a scramble for a loose ball.
"I think Collin [Tanner] was able to tap out the rebound. Then when the ball found Mikkel it was obviously a really impressive shot," said Mooney. "Some great plays were made in overtime by both teams. Of course, we feel like we shouldn't have been in that situation with the lead we had in the first half."
Bucknell's win evened the all-time series between the Bison and Spiders at five wins each.

Hunt's 26 points came on 10-18 shooting from the field, including 2-3 from three-point range. Beagle made six of his eight shots and was 10-10 from the line, the first Spider to make at least 10 free throws without a miss since Tyler Burton was 10-10 vs George Mason at the 2023 Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Beagle also added a team-high eight rebounds, while Collin Tanner registered a team-high five of UR's 15 steals, its most since November 18, 2012 at Minnesota (also 15).
Richmond will return to action Wednesday at the Robins Center against Maine. Tip time is 7 PM and the game will be streamed on ESPN Plus.
