Ullstrom Shines in Season-Opening Win at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A career-high game from Rachel Ullstrom was the difference in the 79-72 win at Temple Monday night for the University of Richmond women's basketball team. With the victory, the Spiders defeat the Owls for the first time since 2006 and open the 2024-25 campaign with a 1-0 start.

How it Happened
Katie Hill sparked the 2024-25 campaign for the Spiders with back-to-back three pointers for an early 6-0 Spider lead. The Owls were able to scratch back and take the lead at 11-6 before Anna Camden posted a layup and Alicia Newell followed with her first collegiate points to cut the deficit to 11-10. After exchanging a few points, Camden retook the lead for the Spiders with a jumper beyond the arc. Temple then tied the game at 17 before two free throws courtesy of Ullstrom sparked a 5-0 run for Richmond, ending the quarter with the Spiders ahead 22-17.
Alyssa Jimenez posted a triple to open the second 10 minutes for her first points as a Spider while Sam Dewey also got on the board for the first time in red and blue with a jumper for a 27-18 UR lead 8:57 into the quarter. Dewey's jumper sparked an 8-0 run with efforts from Hill, Budnik and Camden for a 35-18 Spider advantage. The Owls chipped away at the UR lead 35-22 with 5:32 left in the quarter before Budnik and Ullstrom posted back-to-back layups for a 39-22 lead. Camden and Ullstrom posted the final four points for the Spiders as UR went into the locker room with a 14-point advantage, 43-29.
Out of the break, Hill posted another layup for a 45-29 Spider lead before the Owls were able to chip away at the deficit to 47-36. Ullstrom ended the scoring drought with a triple, but the Owls responded on the other coast. After exchanging more points, the Owls cut the Spider lead to 10, 54-44. Ullstrom and Newell posted the final buckets in the third quarter as Richmond went into the final 10 minutes with a 58-50 advantage.
The Owls cut the Spider lead to two, 62-60 to open the final quarter. Ullstrom was able to get the Spider offense going with a trey, but Temple immediately responded with four points. After a free throw from Addie Budnik, the Owls were able to regain the lead at 67-66 with 3:30 left in the game. Two free throws and a triple from Ullstrom gave the Spiders back the lead, 71-69. Ullstrom shined in the final minute of action, posting a layup and four-straight free throws to give Richmond the victory, 79-72.

In addition, the team finished with 39 rebounds, 17 assists, two blocks and eight thefts. Richmond also posted 10 points off 16 Owl turnovers while the Spider bench also posted 10 points.
- Richmond snapped an eight-game skid against Temple and picked up the first win over the Owls since 2/12/06.
- Steph Ouderkirk, Alyssa Jimenez, Sam Dewey and Anna Camden made their Spider debut in the game.
