Trusler Named FCS Punter of the Year Semifinalist For Third Consecutive Year
12/04/2024 | Football
Richmond, Va. – For the third year in a row, University of Richmond punter Aaron Trusler has been named a semifinalist for FCS Punter of the Year, as announced Wednesday by the Augusta Sports Council.
Trusler's 2024 season saw him further cement his legacy as one of Richmond's all-time great punters. A Second Team All-CAA selection in 2024, Trusler helped Richmond reach fifth in the country in net punting with 41.82 yards a kick. Trusler and the rest of the Spiders punt coverage unit rank ninth nationally with just 42 opponent punt return yards allowed all season. Against North Carolina A&T, he recorded a 75-yard punt, the second-longest of his career, just one yard short of his career best. He is responsible for three of the 10 longest punts in program history with kicks of 76, 75 and 74 yards under his belt. This season, he picked up 13 yards and a first down on a fake punt during the Hampton game.
The Melbourne, Australia native is first all-time for the Spiders in single-game punting average (52.8 against North Carolina A&T), season punting average (43.9) and is second (by .1 yards) in career punting average (41.8), following NFL veteran Mike Bragg.
The Augusta Sports Council, also home to the Ray Guy Award (awarded to the best collegiate punter in the FBS), created the FCS Punter of the Year Award in 2019 to honor the best collegiate punter playing in the FCS. The candidates were evaluated by the FCS Punter of the Year Award committee on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis was placed on net punting average, number of times a punt was downed or kicked out-of-bounds inside the 20-yard line, and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
A national voting body of Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) sports information directors, conference representatives and sports writers will choose the winner from the 10 semifinalists. The winner will be announced on Monday, December 16.
