Spiders Post Revolutionary win on Super Bowl Sunday

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind 24 points from Rachel Ullstrom, and 19 points from Maggie Doogan, the University of Richmond women's basketball team defeated George Washington for the second time this season, 83-61, inside the Robins Center on Super Bowl Sunday for the National Girls & Women in Sports Day Celebration presented by CarMax. With the win, the Spiders improve to 21-4 overall and 11-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while GW falls to 9-15 and 2-10 in A-10 action.

How it Happened
Siobhan Ryan got the Spiders rolling with a trey before Doogan followed the play with a jump shot to put UR up 5-0. After GW scratched back to 5-3, Doogan again posted two points for a 7-3 lead. Townsend posted back-to-back triples to put the Spiders ahead 13-8, but the Revolutionaries wouldn't be silenced as the team posted five points. Ullstrom was able to get one final trey off in between the GW buckets, ending the first quarter with a narrow Spider lead, 16-13.
Addie Budnik and Doogan combined for three points to open the second 10 minutes. Budnik posted a lone free throw to spark a 6-0 run for UR to build a 25-15 lead. Townsend then led Richmond to another 6-0 run, with five of the points coming from Ullstrom for a 31-18 UR advantage. After exchanging a couple of buckets, Budnik was able to get one final trey off to send Richmond into the locker room ahead 40-26.
Out of the break, Doogan, Townsend and Ryan combined for six points following a three pointer from GW to push the Spider lead to 46-29. The Revolutionaries cut the deficit to seven, before Doogn ended the scoring drought for UR with a mid-range jumper to preserve the double-digit lead, 51-40. Budnik, again from deep, sparked a 10-1 lead to rebuild the lead to 17, 61-44. GW would complete the hoop-and-harm with 36 seconds left, but Laren VanArsdale posted a final triple to send UR into the final 10 minutes ahead 64-47.
George Washington got a quick shot off to begin the fourth quarter before Katie Hill dropped a dime to Doogan for a trey, 67-49. Following a few points from the opposition, another three pointer from Budnik gave the Spiders a 20-point lead, 72-52. Ullstrom followed the play with back-to-back triples of her own to bring the score to 79-55. Ullstrom would post a final layup and Kylee Lewandowski would net two free throws to hand Richmond the win, 83-61.
