MELBOURNE, Fla. — Through one event this spring, Spiders senior Rory Weinfurther has already carded more rounds in red figures (two) than she did throughout the fall (one).
Weinfurther's two-under 70 in the final round of the Columbia Classic Moon Golf event at Duran Golf Club Monday matched her lowest score of the season and helped the Spiders to an eighth-place finish in the 16-team field. It was also her second under-par round in 24 hours after shooting below par once in 12 competitive rounds last semester.
"I was definitely staying patient and taking it one shot at a time," said Weinfurther. "I really enjoyed the day and felt like I was more focused because of the windy conditions. Everyone had a great attitude all day as well so that helped with motivation for the longer round today."
After shooting 79 (+7) in Round 1 Saturday, Weinfurther played the final two rounds in three-under par, tied for fourth best in the field. She ended the event in 12th place at 4-over par (220) for her fourth top-20 finish this season and the 19th of her career.
A pair of Spiders were among a group of three golfers to tie for 21st at 8-over par (224): sophomores Hannah Lydic and Olivia Wilkie. It was Wilkie's best finish and lowest score in four tournaments this season.
Freshman Maya Beasley tied for 47th at 17-over par (233), while junior Christine Mandile tied for 63rd in the 90-golfer field at 21-over par (237).
Richmond's team total of 901 (+37) was just three shots behind Dartmouth, which finished fifth at 898 (+34). Yale won the event with a three-round total of 871 (+7).
"The conditions were tough again with the wind so it was great to see everyone fight until the end," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. "We talked a lot all week about being patient and bouncing back when something doesn't go your way on the course. Now, the first event of the spring is under our belt and looking forward to the rest of the semester."
The Spiders will return to the course in two weeks at the RiverTowne Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C. on February 26-27.
