Mooney, King, Bailey, Quinn Earn All-Conference Honors
03/12/2024 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — After leading Richmond men's basketball to a regular season title and No. 1 seed in this week's A-10 Championship, Chris Mooney, Jordan King, Dji Bailey, and Neal Quinn have all received end-of-season Atlantic 10 awards, the conference announced Tuesday. Mooney is the A-10 Coach of the Year, while King is the A-10 Co-Player of the Year, a First Team All-Conference selection, and an All-Academic selection. Bailey shared the A-10's Most Improved Player Award, and Quinn was named Second Team All-Conference.
Mooney's A-10 Coach of the Year award is his first in his 19 seasons at Richmond. Faced with as many newcomers (eight) and as few returning starters (one) as in any of his previous 18 seasons at UR, Mooney led his revamped roster to a 15-3 record in conference play and the program's first regular season title since joining the A-10 in 2001. Richmond's 15 conference wins were a program record, and its 11 straight wins from December 16 to January 31 were the longest win streak for the Spiders since 1935. Richmond's 23 wins this season are already eight more than in 2022-23, when the Spiders finished 15-18 as Mooney was forced to leave the team in mid-February to undergo a heart procedure. Mooney is the first Spider to win a conference Coach of the Year Award since Bill Dooley in 1994 in the CAA.
King shared the A-10 Player of the Year Award with Dayton's DaRon Holmes II, becoming the third Spider to be named A-10 Player of the Year along with T.J. Cline (2017) and Kevin Anderson (2010). He was one of six players selected to the All-Conference First Team, joining Holmes, Josh Cohen and Matt Cross from Massachusetts, Erik Reynolds from Saint Joseph's and Max Shulga from VCU. King, who is pursuing a Master of Liberal Arts degree, was also named to the A-10 All-Academic Team. He is only the second A-10 player to be named to the All-Academic Team and win Conference Player of the Year in the same season, joining Temple's Pepe Sanchez in 1999-2000.
King scored 18.5 points per game during the regular season, second only to Holmes in the Atlantic 10. King shot 42.6 percent from three-point range, second in the conference and 12th in all of Division I among qualifiers, while also ranking among the conference leaders in minutes per game (fifth at 35:01) and steals per game (ninth at 1.3).
Bailey was named winner of the Chris Daniels Award, given to the A-10's Most Improved Player, along with Rahsool Diggins from Massachusetts. Bailey averaged 10.0 points per game during the regular season, up from 3.0 in 2022-23. He also shot 59.3 percent from the field, first in the Atlantic 10 among all players with at least 150 field goal attempts. Richmond's top on-ball defender, Bailey averaged a team-high 1.8 steals per game, fourth in the Atlantic 10. Bailey is the second Spider to win the Chris Daniels Award, joining Tyler Burton in 2021.
Quinn led the Spiders with 3.9 assists per game in the regular season and ranked second on the team in both scoring (12.4 points per game) and rebounding (5.5 rebounds per game). He finished among the league leaders in assists (sixth with 3.9 assists per game), assist-to-turnover ratio (ninth at 2.44), blocks (ninth with 41) while converting 52.9 percent of his shots from the field. Quinn was a Preseason Third Team All-Atlantic 10 pick.
As the No. 1 seed in the A-10 Championship, Richmond received a double bye into the tournament's quarterfinal round. The Spiders will face the winner of Wednesday's game between 8 seed George Mason and 9 seed Saint Joseph's on Thursday at 11:30 AM on USA Network.
