Weinfurther in 1st After 18 Holes in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Even par was enough to put Spiders senior Rory Weinfurther atop the leaderboard following the opening round of the Low Country Intercollegiate Friday. Weinfurther birdied two of her first seven holes and held on to shoot an even-par 72 on a difficult layout at Moss Creek Golf Club. She is tied for first in the field of 90 golfers with 36 holes remaining.
"Scoring was difficult because some of the tee shots and approaches can get narrow," said Weinfurther. "The main reason is definitely the small greens that are harder to hold. A lot of shots into the green would have to be 10 yards short to not roll off the back of the green because that can put you in trouble. It was just about playing conservative, smart golf to minimize big numbers."
As a team, the Spiders are at 13-over par (301), second in the field of 16 teams. UR is just two shots back of East Tennessee State (11-over).
Weinfurther led Richmond with 14 pars, tied for most in the field, while junior Lauren Jones paced the Spiders with four birdies, tied for third among all golfers.
Jones shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for fourth place. Sophomore Hannah Lydic is also hovering near the top of the leaderboard in a tie for 12th at 4-over par (76).
Sophomore Olivia Wilkie at 7-over par (79), tied for 31st, and freshman Maya Beasley is tied for 73rd at 14-over par (86).
Three Spiders are competing as individuals, with freshman Heather Appelson leading the group at 9-over par (tied for 43rd). Senior Claire Yioulos is one shot back at 10-over (tied for 52nd) and junior Christine Mandile is one more shot back at 11-over (tied for 56th).
Richmond will tee off in Round 2 beginning at 10 AM Saturday.
