Dawson's Record Leap Leads Spiders at Fred Hardy Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. – Spiders grad student Alicia Dawson won the Women's Triple Jump with a school-record leap of 12.33 meters, highlighting a strong day of performances from Spiders at the 17th annual Fred Hardy Invitational at Robins Stadium Friday.
Dawson easily outdistanced runner-up Casey Talamni-Kelemen of Lehigh (11.55 meters) and broke a school record that had stood for 14 years: Megan Ney's leap of 12.02 meters in 2010.
Richmond won four other events Friday, taking first in the Women's 100 M (Gabrielle Cummings), Women's 1,500 M (Elizabeth Stockman), Men's 800 M (Cooper Groat), and Women's 4x400 M relay.
In the Women's 100 M, Cummings won the first heat in 12.20 seconds, a time that held up through all six heats. Dawson finished fourth in 12.46 seconds, and Nina Lavelle took seventh in 12.66.
Stockman's win in the Women's 1,500 M was Richmond's first of the day. Her time of 4:25.23 was just in front of teammate and runner-up Madison Trippett (4:26.44). The times for both Stockman and Trippett exceeded the ECAC qualifying standard.
In the Men's 800 M, Cooper Groat easily outdistanced the competition with a time of 1:52.14, an IC4A qualifying mark. William & Mary's Samuel Pritchard finished second in 1:53.96, more than a second-and-a-half behind Groat. Groat's teammate William Tune placed fifth with a time of 1:54.84.
Richmond's Women's Team capped its program by taking first and third places in the 4x400 M relay. The team of Gabrielle Cumming, Caroline Donohoe, Kamiah Wright, and Ginny Beringer cruised to a win with a time of 3:49.19, more than three seconds in front of runner-up VCU. The Spiders relay team of Kamyah Wright, Nina Lavelle, Ashley Bolesh, and Morgan Lyons placed third in 3:54.05.
Other standout performances for the Spiders women's team came from Molly Wise, who placed second in the Women's Long Jump with a leap of 5.54 meters, and Laurel Kurtz, who finished third in the Women's 5,000 M with a time of 17:35.26.
In the Men's 5,000 M, Jordan Bendura placed second with a time of 14:41.94, an IC4A qualifying time. Teammate Henry Haase was third in 14:48.66.
Up next for the Spiders is the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State from March 28-30.
