Richmond, Va. — University of Richmond Head Football Coach Russ Huesman has announced the addition of two new coaches to the Spiders offensive staff, welcoming running backs coach Rachid Ibrahim and tight ends coach Kyle Edwards.
Ibrahim comes to the Spiders after coaching stints at Virginia Tech and Wisconsin. Prior to Richmond, Ibrahim served as a graduate assistant with the Hokies where he aided Coach Elijah Brooks with the running backs including Bhayshul Tuten and Malachi Thomas who combined to rush for 1,244 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2023.
Prior to his time in Blacksburg, Ibrahim coached at Wisconsin during the 2022 season where he was an offensive analyst assistant working with the Badgers running backs. He lead the Wisconsin running backs room during staffing changes at the end of the season and guided the group to a 24-17 Guaranteed Rate Bowl victory over Oklahaoma State. Badgers tailback Braelon Allen ran for 116 yards en route to bowl game offensive MVP honors and 13 of the team's 21 first downs came via the run, part of a 258-yard ground effort.
Ibrahim was a standout running back at both Pittsburgh and Wisconsin, playing in 42 career games. As a senior with the Badgers in 2017, he served as the primary third-down back, registering 28 carries for 130 rushing yards, capping the season with a New Year's Six bowl appearance in the Orange Bowl. Ibrahim rushed for 399 yards on 60 carries in two seasons of action at Pittsburgh.
A Rockville, Md. native, Ibrahim earned a bachelor's degree in communications at Pittsburgh before earning a master's degree in educational leadership and policy analysis from Wisconsin in 2019.
Edwards comes to Richmond after working with some of the nation's top programs and coaches at stops including Alabama and Maryland.
Most recently, Edwards served on the Maryland staff as a graduate assistant beginning in May 2021, working with the Terrapins quarterbacks and tight ends under offensive coordinators Dan Enos and Josh Gattis.
A descendant of the Mike Locksley coaching tree, Edwards helped guide the Terrapins to three-straight bowl victories during his time in College Park, a feat that hadn't been done at Maryland in over two decades. Edwards aided Taulia Tagovailoa to becoming the all-time passing leader in Big 10 history and owning every single Maryland passing record.
Edwards helped tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo to be drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. While at Maryland, Okonkwo had the second-most receptions ever by a Terrapins tight end in a single season and later went on to to be named a 2022 NFL All-Rookie Team selection. In 2023, Maryland tight end Corey Dyches was fourth among all FBS tight ends in receptions and went 25-consecutive games with a catch recorded under Edwards. He also worked with former Spiders quarterback Reece Udinski who spent the 2021 season with the Terrapins. A native of Springfield, Va., Edwards was instrumental in signing a number of DMV recruits to Maryland.
As a student-athlete, Edwards served as scout team quarterback for head coach Nick Saban at Alabama from 2017-19. Despite not seeing game time, Edwards was an instrumental member of the 2018 National Championship team that held the nation's top-ranked offense as well as the Crimson Tide's 2017 Orange Bowl-winning roster.
During his time in Tuscaloosa, Alabama's quarterbacks room consisted of Edwards along with three Heisman Trophy finalists and eventual NFL starters in Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts and Mac Jones. Edwards won Alabama's Fourth Quarter award given to the players who demonstrate the highest level of performance and mental toughness during offseason training and received All-SEC Academic honors in 2018 and 2019 for outstanding academic achievement.
Edwards transitioned to coaching after his playing days, getting his start as a graduate assistant at his alma mater Alabama. Edwards worked closely with Saban and Steve Sarkisian (now current head coach at Texas), working with the tight ends and quarterbacks. Edwards helped the team earn a 35-16 victory over Michigan in the 2020 Citrus Bowl. Following Alabama, Edwards became one of the nation's youngest position coaches when he was hired to lead the quarterbacks at UT Martin before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the season.
A three-time Dean's List honoree, Edwards graduated Cum Laude from Alabama in just three years, earning a bachelor's degree in marketing in 2019. He earned a master's in public safety leadership administration from Maryland in 2023.
The Spiders season kicks off at Virginia Aug. 31 before opening the home slate against Wofford on Sept. 7 at Robins Stadium. 2024 season tickets are on sale now; visit the link here or call 1-877-SPIDER-1 to secure yours today.
