RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond Athletics raised more than $1,000,000 to support Spider student-athletes during the University of Richmond's sixth annual #URHere Giving Day, the department announced Friday. The result was an increase of 26 percent from 2023, when Spider Athletics raised over $800,000 on Giving Day, a record at the time.
"The results from this year's Giving Day are further evidence of the special bond between Richmond Athletics and our network of fans, friends, family, and alumni," said Vice President and Director of Athletics John P. Hardt. "Together, we're working to make the Spider student-athlete experience the best in collegiate athletics, and our success on Giving Day is a tremendous boost to this effort. I'd like to thank everyone who contributed. Your gift will help our Spiders realize their full academic and athletic potential, both in 2024 and for years to come."
This year's Giving Day was held on April 3-4, with more than 2,200 donors contributing to Richmond Athletics during that span, a 39 percent increase from 2023. Prior to Giving Day, Hardt laid out a $1,000,000 goal, noting that "we have greater goals for Richmond Athletics, and achieving them will require a greater level of resources."
Over the last three years, contributions to Spider Athletics on Giving Day have nearly doubled from the 2021 total of $523,000 raised by the department.
"Past and present philanthropic support is part of what makes UR so special," said Associate Athletics Director for Development Brandon Hodgins. "The response from Spiders around the world on our sixth annual UR Here Giving Day is a testament to the love and passion for Spider Athletics and the belief that our student-athletes are worthy of support. THANK YOU to Spider alumni, parents, friends, and fans for your incredible generosity."
Richmond's varsity teams had the opportunity to earn an additional $30,000 in incentives provided by alumnus Rob Goergen, R'93. Spider Field Hockey secured more than $18,000 of those bonus funds by recording the most donors (345, a record for any UR team) and the biggest increases of any team in terms of dollars raised and number of donors. 100% of the team's roster contributed, giving the program a share of the $5,000 available to the team with the greatest student-athlete participation. Together, more than 200 Spider student-athletes contributed, representing more than half of all current student-athletes.
Men's Lacrosse raised more than $219,000 and claimed the remaining $7,500 in bonus funds for having the highest total of any Spiders team. Men's Basketball ($177,000) joined Men's Lacrosse as programs to raise over $100,000. In addition to Field Hockey (345) and Men's Lacrosse (264), Football (215) and Women's Lacrosse (209) also received contributions from more than 200 individual donors.
