Freshmen Lead Spiders to Third-Place Finish at Wofford
04/16/2024 | Men's Golf
NEWTON, N.C. — Freshmen Quin Polin and Jack LaPiana each placed in the top 12 to lead the Spiders men's golf team to a third-place finish at the 13-team Wofford Intercollegiate Tuesday. Polin tied for sixth at 1-over par (211) and LaPiana tied for 12th at 3-over par (213), marking the best finish of the season for both golfers. As a team, Richmond finished at 14-over par (854), eight shots behind champion South Carolina and five behind A-10 rival Davidson. The Spiders entered Tuesday's final round with a three-shot lead.
"The goal is to put yourself in position to win going into the final round, and we've been able to do that in our last two events," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "We didn't get it done today, but we for sure got better because of this experience."
The Spiders have now recorded top-three finishes in back-to-back events after their win in the Any Given Tuesday Collegiate earlier this month.
Entering this week, a Spider freshman hadn't finished in the top 12 of an event since Drew Carlin placed third at the MacDonald Cup in September 2022. Polin and LaPiana are the first pair of Spider freshmen to both finish in the top 12 of the same event since Zack Justice and Andrew Sciarretta tied for second at the 2017 A-10 Championship.
Senior Lou Baker tied for 14th at 5-over par (215), registering his third top-15 finish in three tournaments this spring. Junior Cole Ekert shot 73 (+3) for a third straight round Tuesday and finished the event at 9-over par (219), tied for 26th place. Ekert played the par 3s at Catawba Country Club at even-par at the tournament, tied for the best of any golfer in the field.
Senior Garrett Clark led Richmond with an even-par 70 Tuesday and finished at 15-over par (225), tied for 55th. Sophomore Drew Carlin competed as an individual and tied for 21st at 218 (+8).
Up next for Richmond is the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship at the new Evermore Resort in Orlando, Fla. from April 26-28.
