LEWISBURG, Pa. — Spiders sophomore Olivia Wilkie is tied for first at the Patriot League Championship after shooting a 3-over 73 in Friday's opening round at the Bucknell Golf Club. Wilkie managed one birdie, 13 pars, and four bogeys in chilly, damp conditions and is tied with four other golfers atop the leaderboard with 36 holes remaining.
"I think scoring was difficult for two reasons," said Wilkie. "One, the weather conditions were tough. It was cold, windy, and a bit wet. Two, some of the green complexes are tricky. There are a few holes with really small greens, and it's easy to make a mistake. We've been practicing and playing in really tough weather at home, whether that was snow in February or crazy wind in March. I think that practice really prepared me for today, along with having a really patient mindset."
Wilkie's 3-over 73 was four shots better than any other Spider in Round 1, as Richmond combined for just four birdies, tied for second fewest in the field behind host Bucknell (three). Richmond's team score of 25-over par (305) has them fourth on the team leaderboard, 10 shots behind Round 1 leader Navy (+15).
Sophomore Hannah Lydic and junior Lauren Jones are both tied for 13th at 7-over par after shooting 77 Friday. Senior Rory Weinfurther and junior Christine Mandile are one shot back in a tie for 19th place. Freshman Maya Beasley is 26th at 10-over par (80).
"I saw some good ball-striking but we struggled seeing the ball go in the hole at times," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow following the round. "We will be working on that this afternoon. Today was not our best but we're keeping our heads up and we'll be ready for the challenge and the opportunity that lies ahead this weekend."
Richmond will begin Saturday's second round at 8:30 AM.
