Six Spiders Named VaSID Academic All-State

Richmond, Va. – Six University of Richmond student-athletes were named to the 2022-23 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team. In order to qualify, student-athletes must be a sophomore in academic standing with a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative grade point average. The VaSID All-State Team recognizes the best and brightest in the classroom and on the playing surface across the commonwealth of Virginia.
Richmond's honorees include men's lacrosse players Jake Kapp and Dalton Young, women's basketball's Addie Budnik, swimming and diving's Megan Carson, women's cross country and track & field's Elizabeth Stockman and football's Aaron Trusler.
Budnik earns her third-straight academic All-State honor. The business administration major led the Spiders to their first-ever Atlantic 10 championship en route to being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and was also named the A-10's Defensive Player of the Year as well as Second Team All-Conference. She led the A-10 in three-point percentage (42.4%), good for 14th nationally, as well as in blocks (87), 10th nationally and blocks per game (2.49), good for 13th nationally.
Kapp, a master's in liberal arts major, picked up an academic All-State honor after his graduate year where he was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 and Academic All-Atlantic 10 as he helped the Spiders to its tenth-consecutive conference championship title game. Kapp played in all 16 games where he recorded three goals and three assists as well as a career season-high 29 ground balls and career season-high 10 caused turnovers.
Carson earns her first academic All-State nod after she helped lead the Spiders to a runner-up finish at the Atlantic 10 championships. There, the biology major earned bronze in the 1,650 free, 200 free and as a member of Richmond's 400 and took home fourth as a member of the 800 free relay team. Of the four events she earned top-5 finishes in, four came as marks good enough for top four in program history including the new program record of 3:20.71 set in the 400 free. Carson was named the Atlantic 10's Performer of the Week Jan. 16 and was named the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
Trusler was named academic All-State after the senior business administration major was named a Third Team AP All-American, a Second Team All-American by Phil Steele and a Second Team All-American by Stats Perform. He punted the ball 63 times for 2,168 yards including a long of 76 yards, which tied for the longest in CAA. He punched a CAA-high 26 punts inside the 20-yard line and accounted for seven kicks over 50 yards. He recorded a career-long 76-yard punt, tying for the sixth-longest in program history against William & Mary in the Capital Cup victory and was named a FCS Punter of the Year semifinalist.
A health studies major, Stockman earns her first academic All-State honor after a record-setting senior campaign. She qualified for NCAA East Regional for the fourth time in her collegiate career, running the 1500m and 3,000m steeplechase. Stockman qualified for the 1500m with a 4:15.80 mark at the Penn Relays as she broke the program record in the event and placed sixth at the historic meet. She later went on to win the gold medal at the Atlantic 10 Championships in the event. Her qualifying mark in the 3,000m steeplechase was set at the Atlantic 10 outdoor track & field championships as she clocked a 10:25.02 for second place. Stockman's 2023-24 season saw her earn seven Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honors through the cross country, indoor and outdoor seasons (x1 cross country, x2 indoor, x4 outdoor). In cross country, she placed fourth in the 6,000m at the Atlantic 10 cross country championships, earning First Team All-Conference. Indoors, she helped the Spiders finish second in the distance medley relay at the Atlantic 10 indoor track & field championships and earned All-East honors in the 4x800m (1st place – 8:52.62) and the 1000m (4th place – 2:50.81) at the IC4A/ECAC indoor championships.

He was one of 25 players in the nation and only in Atlantic 10 to be named a Tewaaraton Award Finalist as he finished his career second all-time in career points for the Spiders with 261 (146 goals, 115 assists). Young finished his career with a 57-game point streak and was ninth among active players with 261 career points and 10th among active players with 115 career assists before signing professionally with the Denver Outlaws of the Premier Lacrosse League.
