Trusler Lands On FCS Punter of the Year Watch List
08/02/2024 | Football
Augusta, Ga. — University of Richmond punter Aaron Trusler has been named to the FCS Punter of the Year Watch List, announced Friday afternoon.
Trusler, who was tabbed a Preseason All-American by Stats Perform last week and was named to the CAA's Preseason All-Conference Team last month, was named First Team All-CAA last season as well as a Third Team AP All-American and a Second Team All-American by Phil Steele and Stats Perform. In 2023 he punted 63 times for 2,168 yards in 2023 including a long of 76 yards (t-1st longest in CAA) while averaging 41.6 yards a punt. He punched a CAA-high 26 inside the 20 yard line and accounted for seven over 50 yards and booted a career-long 76-yard punt, tying for the sixth-longest in program history against William & Mary in the Capital Cup victory on his way to being named an FCS Punter of the Year semifinalist.
The Augusta Sports Council, also home to the Ray Guy Award (awarded to the best collegiate punter in the FBS), created the FCS Punter of the Year Award in 2019 to honor the best collegiate punter playing in the FCS. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponent's 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
The 2024 watch list was compiled based on the 2023 FCS Punter of the Year watch list, the 2023 All-Conference teams, and the 2023 All-American Teams.
The FCS Punter of the Year Award winner will be determined by the FCS Punter of the Year Award national voting body which consists of FCS sports information directors and national sports writers.
