Kurtz, Marhold Lead Spiders at Adidas XC Challenge

RALEIGH, N.C. — Facing a stacked field at NC State's Adidas XC Challenge, a pair of Spiders managed top-50 individual finishes Friday at WakeMed Soccer Park. Laurel Kurtz led the women's team in the 5K race with a time of 18:12.3, good for 40th place. William Marhold completed the men's 6K race in 19:02.3 to lead all Spiders and finish 47th.
The men's team placed eighth among the 14 full teams competing, while the women took ninth among the 14 teams in the 5k race.
Eric Scully's time of 19:11.7 was good for 55th place, narrowly in front of teammates Brady Barber (19:19.0, 64th) and Cooper Groat (19:19.3, 65th).
Taylor Healy (19:43.2, 90th), Jason Latina (19:45.3, 93rd), and John Vogel (19:55.2, 99th) also finished in the top 100 for the Spiders. The team's score of 234 slotted UR between seventh-place Elon (220) and ninth-place UNC-Greensboro (238).
Friday was the second time Kurtz has paced the women's team in two races this season. Behind her for the Spiders was Phoebe Rubio, who ran a personal best 18:34.1 to place 55th.
Teammates Izzy Blaylock (18:43.9, 61st) and Paige Joyce (18:44.3, 62nd) finished back-to-back for UR. The Spiders final three scorers were Brooke Reif (19:01.2, 73rd), Lucy Schlachtenhaufen (19:01.5, 74th), and Molly Flanagan (19:11.2, 82nd).
The women finished with a score of 228, just behind eighth-place East Carolina (226) and well in front of 10th-place UNC-Greensboro (314). NC State, the nation's top-ranked team, placed first.
Cross Country will return to action on Saturday, October 19 at the Panorama Farm Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
