Barbulescu Tabbed A-10 Under Armour Rookie of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team has the honor of highlighting freshman Sofia Barbulescu as this week's Atlantic 10 Conference Under Armour Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday in its first weekly awards of the season. The honor is the Spiders' first Rookie of the Week nod since Lara Bakhaya picked up the honor on April 26, 2023, and the first of Barbulescu's career.
Barbulescu, a Snagov, Romania, native, helped lead the Spiders to a 4-3 win over Navy on Sunday, helping move Richmond to an even 1-1 record. In doubles action, Barbulescu, alongside Elizabeth Novak, helped the Spiders clinch the doubles point against Navy with a 6-2 win over Eklund/Jordaan (Navy) on court two. In singles, the freshman continued her strong performance with a straight-set 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 87 Tannenbaum (Navy) on the ace court. Barbulescu moved to a 1-1 overall record in singles and doubles action for the spring.
The Spiders are back in action on Feb. 2 as the team travels to Towson for a matchup with the Tigers at 6 p.m. before taking on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Feb. 16 at 3 p.m.
