STATESBORO, Ga. — The two youngest golfers in the Spiders lineup combined to shoot 5-under par Tuesday in Round 3 of Georgia Southern's Bash in the Boro, leading Richmond to a fourth-place finish in the field of 12 teams.
Sophomore Carson Baez (3-under 69 Tuesday) and freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron (2-under 70) paced the Spiders in Round 3, when UR registered a team score of 1-under par to finish the event at 4-under (860), trailing only Campbell (-13), Jacksonville State (-15) and Georgia Southern (-31).
"The team showed that we are very capable of going low. The next step is putting three rounds together," said Spiders coach Adam Decker.
Rizo-Patron finished tops among all Spiders on the individual leaderboard, tying for 11th place at 4-under par (212). It's Rizo-Patron's second top-20 result in three events this season after he placed 14th at UR's season-opening Metropolis Intercollegiate.
"Staying patient out there and keeping faith in my game," said Rizo-Patron when asked to identify the key to his turnaround after opening the event with a 1-over 73 Monday morning. "That's what helped me because nothing was crazy different. That's just how golf goes sometimes."
Rizo-Patron is the third different Spider to lead the team in scoring in Richmond's three events this year. "It's exciting to have different guys step up and be the low scorer for the tournament. It shows that we have depth and can be a threat to go low," said Decker.
Baez was close behind at 2-under par (214), tied for 16th in the field of 81 golfers. Baez blistered the par 5s at Georgia Southern University Golf Course, playing them in a combined 10-under par during the event, best in the field.
Junior Jack LaPiana also finished in the top 20, tying for 20th at 1-under par (215). LaPiana has now finished in the top 25 in all three of his events this season.
Junior Quin Polin tied for 54th at 8-over par (224), and senior Drew Carlin tied for 64th at 11-over (227).
Playing as an individual, junior Parker Moellinger finished at 3-over par (219), tied for 28th place.
Richmond's two remaining events this fall are the Furman Intercollegiate on October 18-19 in Greenville, S.C. and the Monterrey Collegiate Classic on October 24-25 in Monterrey, Mexico.
"It's a busy stretch of three events in a row, so the priority is on rest and recovery before leaving campus again this weekend," said Decker.
