Bakhaya and Barbulescu Reach Quarterfinals at ITA Atlantic Regional Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team turned in another strong fall showing at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships in Blacksburg, Va., highlighted by a quarterfinal doubles run from Lara Bakhaya and Sofia Barbulescu.
Bakhaya and Barbulescu opened with an 8-6 win over Morgan State's Lauryn Hall and Marta Serra before edging West Virginia's Laura Villanueva Morillo and Lyla Byers 8-7(5). The duo then rolled past Virginia Tech's Sirena Waas and Alston Myatt, 8-2, to advance to the quarterfinals, where they ultimately fell to Virginia's Katie Rolls and Blair Gill, 8-1. The performance improved the pairing's record to 5-2 on the fall season.
In singles play, the Spiders collected three main-draw victories and a consolation win. Lainey O'Neil defeated Morgan State's Marta Serra, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), before falling to Georgetown's Liya Chu, while Beatriz Guerra battled past Georgetown's Paige Gilbert, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and dropped her second-round match to William & Mary's Mira Kernagis.
Bakhaya rallied to top Georgetown's Emily Novikov, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, before bowing out in three sets to Old Dominion's Victoria Matasova. Barbulescu went three sets with Maryland's Magdalena Baniak, and Elizabeth Novak was narrowly edged by James Madison's Corinna Rietmann, 5-7, 6-2, [10-8]. Lucy Webber closed out the week with a consolation victory over Norfolk State's Elena Prado, 6-1, 6-2.
