RICHMOND, Va. — Spider men's basketball signed three highly rated high school seniors Wednesday, shortly after members of the high school Class of 2026 were first allowed to sign agreements with the schools of their choice. The Spiders added guard Sam Simmons from Kansas City, forward Dane Caldwell from Sellersburg, Ind., and forward Chad Cook from Syracuse, N.Y.
Simmons, a 5'9" guard, attends Olathe North High School in Olathe, Kan., where he led the Eagles to a runner-up finish at the 2025 6A Kansas State High School Activities Association state tournament. Simmons was subsequently named Second Team All-State at the 6A classification. Simmons is part of the KC Run GMC AAU program, the same AAU program as legendary Spiders guard Jacob Gilyard. He is the No. 2 Class of 2026 recruit in the state of Kansas, according to 247sports.com. He is the son of Trina and Sam Simmons. His father was a fifth-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in the 2002 NFL Draft following a decorated career as a wide receiver at Northwestern.
Caldwell, a 6'9" forward, is a senior at Silver Creek High School in Sellersburg, Ind., where he led the Dragons to a 22-5 record last year while averaging 12 points, seven rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game and shooting 40% from three-point range. A long, athletic prospect, Caldwell is a member of the Indiana Elite AAU program. He is the No. 10 Class of 2026 recruit in the state of Indiana, according to Prep Hoops Indiana. He is the son of Landon Caldwell.
Cook, a 6'8" forward, attends New Hampton School in New Hampton, N.H., where he led the Huskies to a runner-up finish at the 2025 AAA New England Preparatory School Athletic Council tournament. A versatile prospect who can play both inside and outside, he is a member of the Middlesex Magic AAU program. He is the No. 7 Class of 2026 recruit in the state of New Hampshire, according to the New England Recruiting Report. Cook is the son of Chad and Emily Cook.
