Doogan’s Dominant Performance Grounds Owls Inside Robins Center

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a near triple-double from Maggie Doogan, who finished with 31 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists, the University of Richmond women's basketball team returned to the Robins Center and earned a 72-57 win over visiting Temple Tuesday night. With the win, the Spiders improved to 4-1 while the Owls fell to 3-2.

How It Happened
Doogan opened Richmond's scoring with a triple before the Owls answered with a layup. Rachel Ullstrom followed with a layup of her own that sparked a 7-2 run to build a 10-4 lead. Temple converted two free throws, but Ullstrom and Sam Dewey combined for six straight points to push the margin to 16-6. After two more Temple free throws, Newell added a layup and a free throw around an Owl three as Richmond ended the quarter ahead 19-11.
Newell opened the second with a layup and Sweeney added one of her own for a 23-11 lead. After a Temple jumper, Doogan scored at the rim, but the Owls answered with back-to-back threes to cut the lead to 25-19. Ullstrom knocked down a three, but Temple responded with one of its own. Temple added three more points before Doogan's layup sent Richmond into the half up 30-25.
Temple opened the third quarter with a jumper to cut the lead to three before Newell converted a three-point play to push it back to 33-27. Another Temple triple trimmed the margin to three, but Tierra Simon responded with a three on the other end. The Owls then used a 5-0 stretch to come within one, 36-35, before Doogan ended the drought with a three. Two more Temple free throws cut it to two, but Doogan answered with a layup for a 41-37 lead with 5:27 left in the quarter. After trading baskets, another Doogan three pushed the margin to 51-42 with just over a minute remaining. Two Temple free throws sent Richmond to the final quarter ahead 51-44.
Temple again opened the scoring with a layup before Simon knocked down a jumper. After trading points, Doogan sparked an 11-0 run with contributions from Sweeney and Ullstrom to build a 14-point advantage. Temple added a layup, but Sweeney buried a late three as the Spiders closed out the 72-57 win. Doogan scored 24 points in the second half as Richmond outscored the Owls 21-13 in the fourth.

- Doogan recorded her 14th career double-double and third of the season, and posted her 25th career 20-point game. She finished with a team-high 31 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists while shooting 12-of-21 from the field and 6-of-12 from three.
- Two other Spiders reached double figures: Ally Sweeney with 10 points and Rachel Ullstrom with 13. Alicia Newell added eight points and a team-high three steals.
- Richmond shot 28-of-66 (42.4 percent) from the field and 12-of-32 (37.5 percent) from three, and totaled 42 rebounds, 18 assists, eight steals and two blocks. The Spiders scored 30 points in the paint and 11 points off 14 Temple turnovers.
- Richmond held Temple to 28 percent shooting from three and 30.6 percent from the field.
- The Spiders handed Temple its first loss against an Atlantic 10 opponent this season. The Owls entered the contest 3-0 against A-10 teams George Mason, George Washington and La Salle.
- The game marked Richmond's first home appearance since its season-opening win against Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 4.
- Richmond made at least 10 threes (12) for the third time this season.
- Rayne Wright recorded two steals, two boards and two assists in 15 minutes off the bench.
- Richmond held Temple to its lowest scoring output of the season to date.
