Battered Spiders Battle Past East Carolina
11/08/2025 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Spiders made a physical East Carolina team pay for its bruising style Saturday night at the Robins Center, as UR turned 25 ECU fouls into 29 points from the free-throw line in an 87-72 win. Richmond's 29 free throws were its most in a game since November 27, 2015 (31 in a win vs 14th-ranked California). Far from shrinking from the physicality of the game, the Spiders committed 24 fouls of their own, but also outrebounded the larger Pirates 33-31 and outscored ECU 36-24 in the paint.
"We committed a few too many fouls," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney, "But defensively I thought we were very good, very energetic, active."
Offensively, Richmond's deep bench produced 57 points as all 11 Spiders who entered the game clocked between 13 and 26 minutes of playing time.
"There is an interchangeability of the players," said Mooney of his bench. "It just keeps everybody in the game with a high level of effort and intensity."
"It just makes you want to go even harder when you're in [the game]," said junior forward Jaden Daughtry. "Knowing that you're probably going to be taken out in the next five-six minutes, I feel that makes us just want to go a lot harder when we do get in the game, just go all out."
For the second straight game, back-up center Jonathan Beagle led the Spiders in scoring, finishing with 15 points. He was closely followed by fellow reserves Aiden Argabright, who had 14 points in 14 minutes, and Jaden Daughtry, who scored 13 in 13 minutes of game time. Saturday was the first time three Richmond reserves each scored 13 or more points in a game since Nov. 16, 2009, when Kevin Anderson, Dan Geriot, and David Gonzalvez did it in a win vs VMI.
"We have a lot of people that are ready to come off the bench and are ready to go. That's our biggest strength I feel like — our power in numbers," said Daughtry. "People coming in and being able to play just like the starters and being able to come in and make plays and push the lead up like how we did [tonight]."
Richmond improved to 2-0 for the fifth time in the last seven seasons and won its fourth straight game vs ECU, its former CAA and Southern Conference rival.
Richmond turned an 11-7 deficit into a 22-11 lead with a 15-0 run midway through the opening half. Argabright capped the stretch with five straight points, and had a game-high 10 at halftime as UR built a 42-30 lead.
After the Pirates had closed the gap to nine, Richmond scored eight straight points to go up 57-40 just over 15 minutes remaining. The lead would never again shrink to single digits as the Spiders were able to salt away the win with an 18-20 performance from the foul line in the second half.
Despite struggling from the three-point line (6-22) for a second straight game, Richmond converted 20 of 28 shots from inside the arc (71%) to win for the first time in its last six games vs Division I opponents dating back to last season.
"I really like us and I like the energy that we have and we talked to the guys about even bringing it to another gear," said Mooney after the win.
The Spiders will look to improve to 3-0 Tuesday vs William & Mary at the Robins Center. Tip-off is 7 PM and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and MASN.
